Our Playground Project Story

Our Mission
is to create a safe, accessible, and innovative playground that meets the diverse needs of all students, encouraging creativity, physical activity, and social engagement — fostering a sense of belonging and community through accessible design and thoughtful features.

Our Why
At R.E. Jewell, we believe that every child deserves a place to play, explore, and connect. That’s why we’re on a mission to build a new, accessible playground—one that welcomes all students, sparks creativity, and strengthens our community. The current playground has served generations of students for over 50 years, and it’s time for something new. Play is more than just fun; it’s how kids learn, grow, and build relationships. Our new playground will be a space where every child, regardless of ability, can feel like they belong.

Voices from Our Community
I am part of this committee because play is imperative and important for elementary school aged kids. Research shows improved educational and social emotional development from the ability to play regularly and engage with peers in play. There is an equity gap between schools that have tiling and carefully planned out features with inclusion of all abilities in mind. As a parent I want to support the school district in making sustainable changes to playground designs and maintenance.
